“Is it the skis or the skier?”

Ted Ligety used 35 pairs of skis in training this year.
Julia Mancuso, 40.
And Lindsey Vonn reportedly travels with an entourage of 125 pairs of skis (and she’s tested out 30 pairs of boots already).

In a sport where hundredths of a second matter, these world class athletes know that fitness and technique are critical, but they believe that their equipment may be even more important. In fact, in interviews for this New York Times article, Bode Miller, Vonn, Ligety, and Mancuso all insist that sponsorship is not primarily about the money, but rather about finding a ski manufacturer that will work closely with them to meet their needs and, of course, help them win.

Vonn also has another performance-enhancing trick up her sleeve this season: Fresh out of Lasik eye surgery, Vonn tells the Times that her vision was a little blurry last year, and she should ski even better now that she can see where she’s going.

What do you think: Do skis make the (wo)man? Or does practice make perfect? And how many pairs of skis are too many pairs of skis?
