Sled Today, Ski Tomorrow

Like most of you, we’re counting down the days until ski season. We’re staring at thermometers and obsessing over long-range weather forecasts. We’re digging through the basement and dusting off our equipment. And we’re rehearsing our snow dances.

But that’s not good enough.

I’ve got my wool hat out, and I want to wear it, darn it! I want to experience the thrills of winter, careening down snow-covered hills. Today. Not in a few weeks. Now.

Well, short of booking an expensive trip to a far away mountain, I haven’t got any options around here. They were going to open an indoor ski area in New Jersey, but – forgetting about the questionable environmental implications for a moment – the economy seems to have killed that idea.

Fortunately, the folks at the Hammacher Schlemmer (say that 10 times fast) catalog must’ve heard my cries. Though they can’t change the weather, or get me skiing even a moment sooner, they’ve figured out a way to keep me sledding all year long, for the low low price of just $89.95 (plus shipping and handling). They call it (drumroll please…) the Year ‘Round Sled.

The concept is simple: Instead of relying on a slick layer of snow to propel the sled down the hill, they simply attach small blocks of ice to the sled. Depending on the temperature and, apparently, the length of the grass, you can recreate all the thrills of winter…for up to 30 minutes at a time. Then it’s back to the freezer until tomorrow.

Somehow this doesn’t sound as great as a day of skiing or snowboarding. But, for now, it’ll have to do.

(P.S. Ski Butternut is opening for the season soon. We promise to let you know our official opening date just as soon as we know it.)

Hat-tip to Uncrate for finding this one.
