Oh No She Didn’t!

During the 2010 Winter Olympic games in Vancouver, Julia Mancuso and Lindsey Vonn were both favorites to win medals in most of the alpine disciplines, both of them on the US Ski Team. Because of the obvious competition (only one can win gold), their once close friendship (they had lots of sleepovers as kids on the competition circuit) that seemed less so, a remark or two Julia made about how Lindsey was dominating media coverage during the Olympics – and also just because it makes for a really good story – the media played up the rivalry between the two, and continues to do so today. (If you’re keeping score, they each won two medals in the 2010 Winter Olympics: Julia’s are both silver, and Lindsey took home a gold and a bronze).

The New York Times had a story yesterday about the rivalry, which both insist has been overblown. They acknowledge that they’re not as close as they used to be, but simply because they’ve amicably ‘drifted apart’ because they have different lifestyles and interests, and different philosophies about the role of ski racing in their lives: Lindsey lives for ski racing and ski racing only, while Julia loves the thrill and the challenge and seeks out whatever adventures come her way.

But there’s one goal that Julia will admit she’s fiercely competing with Lindsey for: a World Cup title. Lindsey has owned the podium for the past 3 seasons, but Julia’s got a new ski sponsor (she switched from Rossignol to Volkl this year) and a renewed confidence after her Olympic successes, and she’s ready to battle it out this season. In their first start of the World Cup season, Julia finished 12th in Giant Slalom, and Lindsey in 18th.

So, while the off-slopes rivalry might be exaggerated by the press, the on-mountain competition will surely be intense this season. I say bring it on!
