We’re Number Three!

National Geographic Traveler Magazine recently “assembled a panel of 437 well-traveled experts in a variety of fields—historic preservation, site management, geography, sustainable tourism, ecology, indigenous cultures, travel writing and photography, and archaeology.” They asked the experts to choose the best destinations on earth, scoring them not on popularity, but rather on 6 criteria including environmental quality, cultural institutions, and historic architecture and archaeology.

Our home, the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, was rated the 3rd best destination in the entire United States, and amongst the top 20 in the world. Not surprisingly, 3 of the top 5 places in the United States were in New England, where the panel also picked the entire state of Vermont (the cultural significance of Ben and Jerry’s alone is more than enough to earn this honor) and the coastal region of Maine.
