American Idols

America’s two favorite past-times, apparently, are melodramatic ‘reality’ shows and treacly pop music, and so Americans have made American Idol the most-watched show on television for the better part of a decade.

But all of that changed on Wednesday night. For the first time in 6 years, a show went up against American Idol in the same time slot and won. Which show? Why, the Greatest Show on Earth, of course: The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games!

For at least one night, Americans had enough of reality TV, and instead opted for real-life idols: Lindsey Vonn, Shani Davis, and Shaun White. All 3 delivered gold-medal performances, and helped lead Team USA to the most successful day ever in Winter Olympic history for any country.

I doubt even Simon Cowell could criticize that.

Speaking of great performances, with her win in the Super Combined, and his win in the Super G, Julia Mancuso and Bode Miller just became the most decorated skiers in American Olympic history.
