Would You Like Fries With That?

With the Olympic Halfpipe growing 4 feet this year (from 18 feet to 22 feet tall), the tricks – and the danger – have grown. With more height and more airtime, the athletes are going to have to go even bigger if they want to win gold.

Behold: The Double McTwist 1260. Actually invented by a skateboarder in the 1980s, it’s another trick in a long history of ‘upping the ante,’ where skaters and boarders alike look for ways to go even bigger and impress their fans even more.

And, this year, look for snowboarder Shaun White – who has won the X Games Halfpipe competition an unprecedented 3 times in a row, and is the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the event – to demonstrate that he’s the best boarder in the world by throwing the Double McTwist 12 into each of his runs.

But even Shaun White can’t get it right every time. In X Games practice earlier this week, he misjudged the landing on the trick, and took a gnarly spill. (Warning: Not pretty. Good News: He recovered, and won the competition hours later.)

But when he gets it right, it’s nothing short of breathtaking:

And, P.S.: Skiers huck huge, too! Check out two more firsts, also at the X Games this weekend: TJ Schiller and his perfect 1620 (that’s 4 and a half rotations, for the mathematically challenged), and Bobby Brown and his Switch Dub 1440 Misty.
